Opening Keynote: Benjamin Bach
Seeing through the Hairball: From Networks to Stories through Interactive Visualizations
This talk demonstrates advances in visual and interactive representations for multivariate, temporal and geographic networks. Visualization can support the analysis of complex networks on several levels: it can provide overview, help with quality checks, and help show the data to peers and public audiences. Rather than being a static artefact, visualisation is a methodological toolkit that offers lots of opportunities and power to analysis, exploration, and dissemination. I this talk, I walk through examples and case studies of novel interfaces for network visualisation and describe ways in which we try to close the gap between research prototypes, interdisciplinary applications, and education on the one side, and design, technology and digital humanities on the other side.
Benjamin is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Design Informatics and Visualization at the University of Edinburgh. He established and is now co-leading the VisHub Lab. His research investigates more effective and efficient data visualizations, interfaces, and tools for data analysis, communication, and education. He is regularly collaborating with social scientists, historians, biologists, peace researchers, and public organizations. Benjamin was named Significant New Researcher by the IEEE VIS conference (2021) and Eurographics Young Researcher (2019). Before joining the University of Edinburgh, Benjamin was a postdoc at Harvard University (Visual Computing Group), Monash University (Immersive Analytics Lab), Microsoft-Research, and a visiting scholar at the Brain Imaging Center at the University of Washington.

Closing Keynote: Johanna Drucker
Temporal Modeling: Visualizing Chronologies
The assumption of “time” as an apriori category imposes conceptual limitations that do not fit many aspects of humanistic research and scholarship that are subjective, experiential, narrated, and/or situated within cultural belief systems that diverge from empirical approaches. To address the challenge of modeling these multiple temporalities we need a graphical vocabulary with innovative features that allow users to model their research as well as display a range of scales and metrics. This talk reports on a long-standing research project that began as “temporal modeling” and has its current iteration in the design of a platform, ChronoVis, for graphical engagement with relative and non-standard timelines.
Johanna Drucker is the Breslauer Professor of Bibliographical Studies and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA. She is internationally known for her work in the history of graphic design, typography, experimental poetry, fine art, and digital humanities. Recent work includes Inventing the Alphabet (University of Chicago Press, 2022), Visualization and Interpretation (MIT Press, 2020), and Iliazd: Meta-Biography of a Modernist (Johns Hopkins University Press 2020), Digital Humanities 101: An introduction to Digital Methods (Routledge, 2021).

In this hands-on workshop, we will give an introduction to network analysis. We will be creating networks in Python using Jupyter Notebooks, discuss best practices, and reflect critically on our methodology. Additionally, we will introduce the pipeline Quarto and highlight its use for publishing reproducible research.
Workshop 2: Linked Open Data: Research Tools and Wikidata

Linked Open Data (LOD) plays an increasingly important role in the context of research projects in the humanities, cultural studies and archaeology. The work and community standards of Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) consortia such as NFDI4Culture, NFDI4Objects, NFDI4Memory and Text+ are based on ontologies, authority data, thesauri, controlled vocabularies and need techniques to interlink distributed research data to create a huge (conceptional) cultural knowledge graph. As LOD’s inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee said: “The Semantic Web isn’t just about putting data on the web. It is about making links, so than introduction to Linked Open Data, Semantic Modelling and how to SPARQL query RDF files and triplestores. In addition, the Community Hub “Wikidata” will be shown. This workshop is a mix of impulse presentations and Hands-On sections where Research tools such as Protegé, Twinkle, Wikidata, and the SPARQLing Unicorn QGIS Plugin will be presented.at a person or machine can explore the web of data. With linked data, when you have some of it, you can find other, related, data.”
